Deadly Police Shooting Resolves in Settlement Between Greenwood Police Department, Estate of Monica Vaught

ICR

Indianapolis, Indiana – On March 29, 2022, Monica Vaught was shot and killed by members of the Greenwood Police Department after they had pursued her for several blocks and eventually trapped her in the Greenwood Police Department parking lot.

The family hired attorneys Chase Wilson, of Indiana Civil Rights LLC and Hurst Limontes LLC, and Brandon Tate, of Waldron Tate Land LLC, to represent them as The Estate in a civil rights case alleging excessive force had been used in the shooting of Monica Vaught.

After a preliminary investigation by the attorneys for the Estate, a complaint was filed in Johnson County, Indiana on September 8, 2023, alleging Ms. Vaught’s civil rights were violated due to the use of excessive force by the four officers who fired their weapons, and those violations caused Ms. Vaught’s death. Shortly thereafter, the lawsuit was removed to Federal Court in the Southern District of Indiana on October 4, 2023.

The parties then engaged in written discovery and several depositions of the officers on scene, including those who fired at Ms. Vaught. A Motion for Summary Judgment seeking dismissal of The Estate’s claims was filed by counsel for the Defendants on December 16, 2024 and a response in opposition to that motion was filed by counsel for the Estate on January 13, 2025.

On February 21, 2025, while the motion for summary judgment was pending, the sides agreed to a settlement where the City of Greenwood agreed to pay the Estate of Monica Vaught to resolve the claims of excessive force and wrongful death. The amount of settlement is not being disclosed at this time out of respect for the family’s privacy.
