Ruffo Caselli’s Humanoid Robots Anticipated the Future
New Exhibitions in Russia and Italy Honor the Visionary Father of Cybernetic Existentialism.

The much-anticipated exhibitions featuring humanoid robots, as originally envisioned by Italian artist Ruffo Caselli (1932–2020), are a timely testament to his remarkable foresight from the 1970s—when he first depicted technologies that the world is now actively researching. Hot on the heels of a successful retrospective at Via Foro Bonaparte in Milan, two additional shows are set to open in Russia and Italy in the coming months.

The first exhibition will take place at the Nizhnyil Tagil Fine Art Museum, opening on January 14, under the curatorial expertise of Elena Garas, a renowned authority in contemporary art and a specialist in the Cybernetic Existentialist movement. Ruffo Caselli is widely regarded as one of this movement’s pioneers, with his art enjoying widespread acclaim across Europe, the Americas, and Russia.

From Milan, where the artist spent most of his life, to a prominent gallery in Manhattan that championed traveling exhibitions starting in the 1980s, Caselli’s work has steadily gained international recognition. In recent years, thanks to Ms. Garas’s efforts, his art has been showcased in prestigious venues, including the Historical Museum of the Urals in Chelyabinsk and the Historical Museum in Uray in the Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous region—each event met with resounding interest from the public and experts alike, including Oksana Yurievna, director of the Strelets Museum, and Zaitsev Dmitry Stanislavovich, doctor of cultural studies.

In Italy, on March 1, a historic art gallery in Genoa will commemorate Caselli with an exhibition featuring his iconic humanoid robots—oil paintings that often include microchips created decades ago, astonishingly foreshadowing the advent of artificial intelligence. Expectations are high among art enthusiasts as they prepare to honor this Italian Master, whose work so strikingly anticipated the future.
